Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

Took a ride south today to see the organ pipe cactus. This park is huge, the welcome center was 17 miles past the sign. Also a very nice campground where we were unable to get reservations so are staying in Ajo.

The Ajo Mountain drive had awesome scenery along a mostly dirt road.

This is the chain-fruit cholla, also known as a “jumping cholla” because the cholla joints seem to jump off the plant and attack unsuspecting passers-by. They actually don’t jump but are very good at hitching a ride, which is painful, you need tweezers to get the barbs out.

Along the way is an arch, actually a double arch. The top arch looks like it is wearing pretty thin.

Some more pretty scenery.
